The invention relates to a method for preparing a catalyst composed of a ring-shaped carrier and a catalytically active oxide material applied on the surface of the carrier. The catalytically active oxide material contains at least molybdenum, bismuth, cobalt and/or nickel and iron. The thoroughly dried blend is produced from the starting compound of the elemental component of the catalytically active oxide material, and the thoroughly dried blend is heat-treated at 150-350°C to obtain the precursor material. Then, the carrier is wetted with water, and a layer of precursor material is adhered to the surface of the wetted carrier by contacting the carrier with the finely dispersed precursor material. The coated carrier is then dried.
